イギリス、コーンウォール州にて現在設立から10年以上が経ち、イギリス国内にて知名度を上げて来ているハンドメイドブランドGray Guitars。
今回入荷致しました品は同ブランドの代表的なSTスタイルのモデル、Emperor。
薄く仕上げられたニトロセルロースラッカーの風合いをまとったShell Pinkがトラッドな雰囲気を醸し出す中ネックに使用された見事なフレイムのローステッドメイプルネックが目を惹く、高級感溢れる品です。

自身もプレイヤーとして30年以上の経験を持つトム・グレイ氏によって製作され、プレイヤー目線で考えられた使用が光るのもこちらのブランドの特徴です。

薄く仕上げられたDシェイプに近いネックはオイルとワックス加工が施された事で非常に滑りも良く、長時間の演奏の中でもストレスの少ない、良質な弾き心地が楽しめます。
指板面においても妥協はされておらず、9,5"Rから徐々に12"Rへと変化して行くコンパウンドラディアス仕様を採用し、フレットも当店入荷後Jescar #55090
へリフレットが施されているので現代的なテクニカルなフレーズにも対応しやすいです。

木材構成はプレミアムグレードのアルダーを使用したボディ、カナディアンローステッドメイプル、AAAグレードのローズウッドを使用した指板等小規模なハンドメイドブランドらしい厳選された材を使用。
芯の太さと艶やかさが感じられる豊かな中低域と伸びやかな高域が印象的なバランスの良い組み合わせです。

ピックアップには同国のハンドワウンドピックアップ、RadioshopのシングルコイルモデルChris Buck ID Single CoilとハムバッカーモデルのClassic PAFをマウント。
Guitar World誌にて数々の賞を受賞し、SNS界隈でも多くの支持を集めるChris Buckのシグネチャーピックアップのサウンドは太さが際立ちながらモダンな要素も感じさせる様に粒の揃いが良く、彼の得意とするブルーススタイルとの相性の良さが感じられる骨太な音色が楽しめます。
またリアのハムバッカーモデルは名称の通りPAFをベースとした明るいサウンドが楽しめ、シングルモデルとの相性の良さが感じられるバランスの良いサウンド構成が多岐に渡るジャンルで活躍してくれます。

コンディションは経年や使用に伴うスリキズや打こん、パーツ類のくすみや一部塗装にヤレ等が見受けられますがフレットは当店入荷後にリフレットを施し、現在トラスロッドは緩めとなっておりますが演奏性に支障は無く、良質な弾き心地が楽しめます。

国内では市場でも見かける事が少ないレアな1本。

Based in Cornwall, England, Gray Guitars is a handmade brand that has been in business for over 10 years and is gaining recognition throughout the UK.
The model we’ve just received is the Emperor, the brand’s signature ST-style guitar.
This luxurious instrument features a Shell Pink finish with a thin layer of nitrocellulose lacquer that exudes a traditional vibe, while the stunningly flamed roasted maple neck—used for the mid-fret section—is a real eye-catcher.

Crafted by Tom Gray, who has over 30 years of experience as a player himself, this brand is characterized by its design philosophy that prioritizes the player’s perspective.

The neck, finished with a thin coat and shaped close to a D-profile, has been treated with oil and wax, resulting in a very smooth feel. This allows for a high-quality playing experience with minimal stress, even during extended performances.
No compromises were made on the fingerboard either. It features a compound radius that gradually transitions from 9.5“ to 12”, and the frets have been re-freted with Jescar #55090
upon arrival at our store, making it well-suited for modern technical playing.

The wood selection features premium-grade alder for the body, Canadian roasted maple, and AAA-grade rosewood for the fingerboard—all carefully selected materials characteristic of a small-scale, handmade brand.
It offers a well-balanced combination of rich mid-low frequencies with a sense of depth and warmth, and crisp, extended high frequencies.

The guitar is equipped with hand-wound pickups from Radioshop, a Canadian company: the Chris Buck ID Single Coil (single-coil model) and the Classic PAF (humbucker model).
Chris Buck’s signature pickups—which have won numerous awards in Guitar World magazine and garner significant support on social media—deliver a sound characterized by remarkable thickness and a well-defined tone that also incorporates modern elements. You can enjoy a robust tone that pairs perfectly with the blues style he excels at.
As the name suggests, the rear humbucker model delivers a bright, PAF-inspired sound. Its well-balanced tone, which complements the single-coil model perfectly, makes it versatile enough to excel across a wide range of genres.

In terms of condition, there are some scratches and dents from age and use, as well as some discoloration on parts and wear on parts of the finish. However, the frets were refretted after the guitar arrived at our shop, and while the truss rod is currently loose, it does not affect playability, and you can enjoy a high-quality playing experience.

This is a rare instrument that is rarely seen on the domestic market.
We highly recommend that players pick this up and try it out.
